“Zum Hirschen” was first mentioned in 1789 as the restaurant of Klausmelchers Aberer. Next to the Hirschen at house number 46, there was a brewery. That is why our family has had the nickname “Bierar” (from “beer”) since then.
Around 1850 the owners of the Hirschen brewery were Jakob and Andreas Moosbrugger.
In 1869 Christian Greußing (1842-1908) took over the business. He had married Maria, a daughter of the then owner Moosbrugger. Maria died in 1870 when giving birth to a child.
His son by his second marriage with Anna Katharina Muxel was Peter Greußing (1875-1958), who in 1910 advertised the guesthouse Hirschen with rooms for guests, a farm and a brewery. In 1920 a big renovation was made. Then Peter married Maria Ritter from Au.
He had been mayor of Schoppernau for many years. After his death in 1958 the farm was leased. His son Jakob Greußing (1906-1981) extended the Hirschen, he added a hall with 120 seats and more guestrooms. Together with his wife Albertina he ran the business until 1970.
Marianne and Peter Greußing took over the guesthouse in 1971.
They were the ones who actually made the hotel like it is today – with renovations and reconstructions in the years 1973, 1979, 1990, 1993 and 1999. And still today hospitality and personal contact with our guests are our priorities.
In spring 2003 the spacious spa area and the beauty parlour were opened. In the summer of 2005 another big annex followed: the indoor event swimming pool! Worth mentioning is also the beautiful and over 100-year-old traditional dining room (the “Wälderstube”), which was built in 1890 by Kaspar Felder, son of the regional writer Franz Michael Felder. In November 2006 this room was integrated in the entrance hall, resulting in a bright and friendly feel-good atmosphere.
Now the older son Christian and his Steffi take much pleasure in actively participating in the future of the Hirschen and are looking forward to this challenge.
